The World Bank Director for Education, Dr. Jaime Chanduvi, has inspected the bank’s assisted project, the African Centre of Excellence, in 10 universities across Nigeria, saying that the future of African countries rested on the education of the youth.
Chanduvi said the African Centre of Excellence projects in the institutions were geared towards improving the quality of science and technology education in the country.
He said, “We set up a fantastic meeting with the universities that participated in the ACEs. The ACE is a great opportunity to foster better research and quality in the universities in Africa. We have 10 ACEs in Nigeria and they are providing very high-quality education in science and technology to young people from other African countries.
“The youths have a great opportunity on the one hand to receive quality education in technology and, on the other hand, they have a huge responsibility because the future of Africa is on their shoulders. This future is in the areas of research work in productive sectors. They have to build a career for themselves, and create job opportunities in the future. This is an important investment and we want them to continue in this process of growth and development in Africa.”
One of the students in AUST, a national of Sierra Leone, Sanra Musu, said her research work centered on the development of bio-degradable polymers for breast cancer treatment.
She said, “I believe there is a great future in Africa. I believe, as a woman, there is much more that we can do in Africa. My research is going towards the development of bio-degradable polymers for the treatment of breast cancers.”
