Shell releases $10m, reaffirms commitment to Ogoni cleanup

PORT HARCOURT—SHELL Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, SPDC, has said it will continue to support the cleanup process of Ogoni communities in Rivers State, adding that it had released $10 million take-off fund to the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Agency, HYPREP. Shell engineer The firm’s General Manager, External Relations, Mr. Igo Weli, who spoke, weekend, in Port Harcourt at an interactive session with the media on the Ogoni cleanup project, said the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, recommendation encouraged a multi-stakeholder efforts driven by the Federal Government. He added that the oil company will continue to play its role alongside other stakeholders under a transparent governance framework. He said that 15 SPDC JV sites, specifically mentioned in the report that needed attention, had been remediated in the communities and certified by government, adding that the firm had also raised its standard on remediation approaches in line with industry best practices. Igo assured that “SPDC JV remains fully committed to continue supporting and contributing its share within the appropriate framework and governance structures. “We encourage all relevant stakeholders to also remain committed to contributing their share.”

Apes The Fox/Chemin Entertainment production managed to outdraw “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which fell by more than half from its opening three-day weekend to pull in $44.2 million, website Exhibitor Relations reported. “War,” directed by Matt Reeves, tells the continuing story of how intelligent primate Caesar (Andy Serkis) and other apes battle the forces led by an evil human dictator (Woody Harrelson). The film, made for $150 million, has a 95 percent approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, which collates reviews. Landlord allegedly collects N5m from Badoo gang to kill family of 5

                                        

THERE were indications, yesterday, that a landlord in Ikorodu area of Lagos State was among several others arrested in connection with Badoo killings in the area. The landlord (identity undisclosed) reportedly confessed during interrogation to have collected N5 million to show members of the dreaded cult gang where the victims—a fisherman, his wife and three children— were sleeping. Some residents of Iruwen community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard: “After the incident, relatives of the deceased visited the scene and took the grinding stone to the Oba of Ikorodu, where they reported the matter and thereafter, left with the stone. “They took the stone to Igede, Benue State, where a traditional investigation was carried out. They reported their findings to the Police, which led to the arrest of the landlord, who reportedly confessed to the crime.”
